Don't throw away your stapler. As I was about to destroy my stapler in anger I got a pair of needle nose pliers and bent the very end back in just a touch. Now it works great, and only one staple comes out at a time. If one or both sides of the staple don't bend down then that is the side the front needs to be bent in. Adjust inward until the staple staples perfectly.
